Health care, or healthcare, whichever expression you prefer, is the prevention, treatment and management of sickness using the services offered by the medical, nursing and allied health professions. The World Health Organizations definition is a little different and refers more to the prevention of sickness and services to promote this, in addition to intervention that should be available to a single individual as well as a whole population. Collectively, this provision of medical facilities would be known as a health care system.

The term health care has not always been used though and prior to this is it was often just referred to medicine or the health sector but this was used more by English speaking countries. Around the world today, most nations have a system in place to ensure that everyone receives healthcare irrespective of their social standing or financial situation. It was the United Kingdom that pioneered the first population based health care system back in 1948 called The National Health Service run by each consecutive administration.

According to The WHO, a good alternative to this system is that in Italy where insurance for health is a compulsory but is a government funded service and possibly the second best around the world. Other examples are Medicare in Australia, established in the 1970s by the Labor administration, and by the same name Medicare in Canada, established between almost twenty and 1984. general healthcare contrasts to the systems like healthcare in The USA or South Africa, though South Africa is one of the many countries attempting healthcare reform. people who work in healthcare include all professionals whose job it is to uphold life, treat and cure illness and try to better the health of people. The collective term for this is the healthcare industry but the word industry may not necessarily be the best one to use.

Over a relatively short period of time, the health care industry has become one of the fastest expanding in the world with an average growth rate of just over ten percent of the gross domestic product of many developed countries and is still increasing, playing a huge role in the domestic economies of most nations. America bucks this trend with, back in 2003, a health industry responsible or over fifteen percent of gross domestic product but this is anticipated to rise considerably by 2016 when it will almost one fifth of America GDP.
